The Russian cargo ship Ursa Major has sunk in international waters off the coast of Spain. Onboard were critical reactor components intended for the Leader icebreaker—planned to be the most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker in the world.

These parts were headed for Vladivostok from St. Petersburg, where they would play a key role in the icebreaker’s construction.

Reports say it sank after an explosion in its engine room.
Authorities in Spain say they’ve handed over rescue responsibilities to the Russian military.

Analysts suggest the loss of these reactor parts could significantly delay work on the Leader icebreaker.
