President-elect Donald Trump, speaking at a press conference, declined to rule out military or economic action as part of his goal to regain U.S. control over the Panama Canal and acquire Greenland, a Danish territory.

When asked if he could assure the world that military or economic coercion would not be used in pursuit of these objectives, Trump responded, "No, I can't assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security."

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the future of Greenland is for its people to decide.

Greenland, with a population of 57,000, has been a part of Denmark for 600 years and currently governs most of its domestic affairs as a semi-sovereign territory within the Danish realm.
