It's the observance of Lent that opens our minds and hearts to really enter in more deeply to these great mysteries of our faith, the great reality of our Christian life. With regard to Lent, this is to prepare us for the culmination of the saving work which our Lord began by His incarnation, by His birth in Bethlehem namely, His Passion and Death and Resurrection, and the Easter season concludes with the Ascension, then the Novena in preparation for Pentecost and the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Church. These great events, the culmination of our salvation, require then the 40 days, in imitation of our Lord's 40 days, of prayer and fasting in the desert, 40 days of preparation so that our hearts, our minds and hearts are disposed to celebrate with true faith and with true joy the mystery of our salvation. And during Lent, we emphasize in particular : prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. And in these three ways, principle way through our prayer to draw closer to God to live more fully in His presence, through fasting to put our lives in order in the practical aspects to permit us to be close to our Lord and to purify from our lives anything that's taking us away from our Lord. And lastly, the almsgiving, whenever we live more fully in Christ, whenever we're living more completely in His company, we naturally are caring for our brothers and sisters. First of all, in our own home, in our family, to make sure that we express His pure and selfless love in the relationships we have at home. But then, in the neighborhood, in the wider society, and ultimately in the whole world, helping in any way we can, any brother or sister who is in need. We wouldn't understand why the Days of the Sacred Triduum, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday and Ascension Thursday, 40 days after Easter and the 50th day of Pentecost, and the descent of the Holy Spirit. It's the observance of Lent that opens our minds and hearts to really enter in more deeply to these great mysteries of our faith, the great reality of our Christian life.
