A Chinese ship ran aground in stormy weather in shallow waters off a Philippines-occupied island in the disputed South China Sea, prompting Filipino forces to go on alert, Philippine military officials said Sunday.
Philippine military and coast guard personnel were deployed after assessing that the Chinese fishing vessel appeared to have run aground in the shallows east of Thitu Island (locally known as Pag-asa Island) on Saturday due to bad weather.
However, they later observed that the vessel had been successfully extricated, according to regional navy spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Ellaine Rose Collado. (Video courtesy of Associated Press / AFP)
