Marcos signs law strengthening judiciary fiscal autonomy

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signs into law Republic Act (RA) 12233, a measure defining the scope and extent of the judiciary’s fiscal independence as a co-equal branch of government. In his ceremonial signing in Malacañang on Aug. 14, 2025, Marcos said the Judiciary Fiscal Autonomy Act puts safeguards in place so the Judiciary can work more efficiently and more independently. RA 12233 also establishes a Judiciary Trust Fund to replace the Judiciary Development Fund, pooling all legal fees, existing resources and income from deposits, to be managed by the Chief Justice subject to the Commission on Audit's post-audit.
