Spain rescues hundreds of migrants, including newborn, off Canary Islands
Hundreds of migrants were rescued on Sunday, August 24, off Canary Islands and taken to Arguineguin port, in the Gran Canaria island.
The group of 248 people, including a newborn baby, a few children and women, disembarked with the help of Spanish rescuers. Some of them received medical attention.
The number of migrants reaching the Canary Islands from West Africa hit an all-time high in 2024 but the number of arrivals has fallen this year 46.7%, latest Interior Ministry data indicate showed on August 15.
The Atlantic route is especially dangerous as rough weather can easily capsize the fragile rafts, dugout-like boats and dinghies used by most migrants.
