A tragedy has shaken Mexico following the discovery of the bodies of digital influencer Esmeralda Ferrer Garibay, 32, her husband Roberto Carlos Gil Licea, 36, and their two children, Gael Santiago, 13, and Regina, 7.
The family was found lifeless inside an abandoned Ford Ranger pickup truck in Guadalajara on 22 August, but their identities were only officially confirmed this week.
Esmeralda, known on social media as Esmeralda FG, had tens of thousands of followers thanks to her lifestyle, travel and lip-sync videos. Some of her content featured performances with narcocorridos — ballads narrating cartel and drug-trafficking stories — a detail that now draws attention in light of the circumstances of the tragedy.
The family had recently moved to the Guadalajara metropolitan area for work reasons. Roberto worked in the car trade and was also involved in tomato farming in the state of Michoacán, an activity which, according to investigators, may be linked to the crime.
