Heritage Day in South Africa took on extra flavour this Wednesday when Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria transformed into the site of the world's largest communal braai (barbecue) festival, in a bid for a Guinness World Record.
Footage shows over 2,000 people arriving at the famous stadium, dancing and celebrating as they braai, eat, and take photos.
According to a Guinness World Records adjudicator, the previous record was set in Japan in 2023 with 2,220 people. Participants in South Africa hoped to surpass that number with 2,500 people.
"How do I feel about being part of history? Marvellous [...] coming to South Africa and feeling this energy, just being united - this is history in the making. It doesn't get better than this," a participant from the Congo said.
"What's truly great is sharing this moment with South Africans of different races and cultures, and with my wife and my dad [...] It's a wonderful experience," a second attendee said.
Confirmation of the attempt's success has not yet been announced, as the numbers are still being reviewed and verified by the Guinness World Records adjudicators.
