Mexico battles flesh-eating worm with market inspections as outbreak moves north
Veterinary brigades from the government of the Mexican state of Oaxaca inspect cattle at livestock markets on Oct. 3, 2025, spraying wounds with larvicide to prevent flesh-eating screwworm parasite infestations as Mexico battles a growing outbreak that has complicated trade relations with the United States. According to veterinarian Arcy Hernandez Garcia, the teams applied larvicide and healing agent, while conducting a 'wound monitoring and sweep' campaign, though she noted ranchers often refuse or can't report suspected cases, mainly because they don’t identify the parasite.
