A rare daytime encounter at Kumana National Park, Sri Lanka, shows a pair of brown fish-owls being harassed by a pair of much smaller Indian paradise-flycatchers.
Ecologist and tour leader Nicholas Royal, from Queensland, Australia, captured the dramatic wildlife moment while on tour with Unearth Adventure.
The owls had been unsuccessfully hunting frogs at a small lagoon when the feisty flycatchers began swooping at them relentlessly.
Brown fish-owls are unusual among owls for foraging during daylight hours and in this case, their rare daytime activity drew some very unwelcome attention.
The fascinating encounter was shared on Instagram where one user commented: “This owl looks fed up.”
Another added: “Omg leave him alone!!! The poor fella haha”
