Colombia zoo indulges animals with Christmas-themed enrichment activities

Staff at Hacienda Napoles theme park in Colombia gives rescued animals Christmas-themed environmental enrichment activities on Dec. 11, 2025, offering decorated food and toys to lions, hippos, elephants and big cats, according to the park. Biologist Mariana Cifuentes said the team set up special enrichments for species including pumas, jaguars, lions, monkeys, elephants and hippos to stimulate them physically and mentally and break their daily routine. Visitors watched and took photos as lions pulled down hanging gifts, tortoises and hippos ate vegetables arranged with festive decorations, and pumas and jaguars explored Christmas trees, ornaments and mock presents in their habitats. Hacienda Napoles, built on the former estate of drug trafficker Pablo Escobar, now promotes itself as a conservation-focused theme park that houses animals rescued from illegal trafficking and uses environmental enrichment to encourage natural behaviors.
