Government-backed leftist candidate Jeannette Jara has conceded Chile’s presidential election to conservative rival José Antonio Kast after losing the runoff vote. With more than 95% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.3% of the vote, while Jara received 41.7%.

Kast’s victory marks another win for the resurgent right in Latin America. Jara urged her supporters to defend social and political rights gained in recent years, as Chile prepares for a shift in leadership and policy direction.
