Circus — Circus 1973 (USA, Folk, Psychedelic, Boogie Rock)

A one-album band from Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Formed in 1969 as Sound Street. In 1970, the band moved to Madison and began performing in local bars. As their popularity grew, their gigs expanded to Florida, Colorado, Massachusetts, Maine, Georgia, Tennessee, and the entire Midwest. In 1973, guitarist and vocalist Gary Konkol died of cancer. He was replaced by Brett Peterson, and that same year, the band recorded their self-titled album at American Music Studios in Sauk City. It was mixed at Paragon Studios in Chicago and released in 1974. A national tour followed in support of the album, where the musicians were well received in the South, West, and Northeast of the United States. With an eye on a second album, the band recorded a single in Schaumburg, Illinois. Meanwhile, the band continued to tour, opening for Styx, B.B. King, Ted Nugent, The Amboy Dukes, Eric Carmen, The Raspberries, Hot Tuna, John Sebastian, Firefall, Bonnie Bramlett, and The Amazing Rhythm Aces. After touring for seven years, Circus never recorded a second album. In November 1976, the band performed their farewell concerts at the University of Wisconsin.
