Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A young lawyer died in Gwalior on Monday, just days before his scheduled wedding on December 30. The family has alleged that he took the extreme step after suffering emotional distress upon allegedly seeing his fiancée with another constable. Police have sent the body for post-mortem and said all aspects of the case are under investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Mrityunjay Chauhan, who lived in a rented house in Adarsh Puram area of Gwalior. He was practising law and was also pursuing a PhD. On Monday, he was found * inside his room. Police reached the spot after receiving information and took the body into custody.
According to family members, Mrityunjay had been in a relationship with a female sub-inspector posted in Morena for the past five years, and their marriage was fixed for December 30. His mother said he went to meet his fiancée a day earlier than planned, where he allegedly saw her in her room with another constable. An argument reportedly followed, which escalated into a physical scuffle.
The family claimed that after the incident, Mrityunjay lodged a complaint at a police station regarding the assault, but no action was taken. He later called his mother, crying, and informed her about the incident. After this, he reportedly slipped into depression.
Before ending his life, Mrityunjay posted a status on social media quoting a dialogue from the recently released film ‘Tere Ishq Mein’, starring Dhanush and Kriti Sanon: “There is death in love, but no liberation.” His fiancée reportedly commented “bless” on the post.
Mrityunjay’s mother, Shivkumari, a government school teacher posted near Vijaypur, had travelled to Gwalior on Monday to meet her son. Instead, she received the news of his death. His father lives in Vadodara, Gujarat, while his elder brother lives separately. The parents have been living apart for several years.
After the body was taken down, police handed over Mrityunjay’s bracelet, chain and amulet to his mother. She broke down and said her son was her only support. She added that he had recently arranged her surgery in Delhi and used to call her daily to enquire about her health.
The mother further alleged that Mrityunjay had purchased two plots in Gwalior in the name of his girlfriend using his own share of money, and that there had been no earlier suspicion regarding the relationship.
Police said Mrityunjay lived alone with his dog. A thin plastic rope was used in the suicide. Food was found cooking in the kitchen, with some already eaten. An open liquor bottle and a glass were also found in the room. A thick rope was recovered as well, raising suspicion of prior planning.
Police officials said the case is being investigated from all angles. Further action will be taken after receiving the post-mortem report, call details and other evidence.
