German Chancellor on Ukraine War: Friedrich Merz described the war in Ukraine as a “bad dream” and a “daily nightmare” as he addressed the 8th German-Ukrainian Business Forum in Berlin on Monday.
Merz told attendees that the conflict, now approaching four years, affects not only Ukraine but Europe as a whole. He said the ongoing war weighs heavily each day, underscoring the urgency of continued international support for Kyiv.
The chancellor also addressed the European Union’s proposal to use frozen Russian assets to fund a $140 billion reparations-style loan for Ukraine. While some EU countries, notably Belgium where many of the assets are held, have expressed concerns about investor confidence, Merz said Germany supports mobilising the assets to help Ukraine over the next two years.
