Deadly ELN guerilla assault on military base leaves 7 dead, 31 wounded in Colombia

At least seven Colombian soldiers are killed and 31 others wounded when the ELN guerrilla group attacked a military battalion in Aguachica, Cesar department, on Dec. 18, 2025, using explosive devices and gunfire, authorities said. The assault on the Captain Antonio Ricaurte Infantry Battalion No. 14 was attributed to the Camilo Torres Restrepo front, a branch of the ELN guerilla group, and involved drones modified to launch explosives. The attack occurred following a 72-hour 'national armed strike' launched by the ELN over the weekend, with peace negotiations between the guerrilla group and President Gustavo Petro's government frozen since January 2025 after a violent offensive in the Catatumbo region displaced more than 50,000 people.
