Defence officials from Thailand and Cambodia will meet on December 24 to discuss the possibility of resuming a ceasefire, Thailand’s foreign minister said, as border fighting between the two countries entered a third week.
The decision followed a special meeting of Southeast Asian foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur, where ASEAN sought to revive a truce previously brokered by Malaysia and the United States. Talks will take place under the long-standing General Border Committee mechanism, with Thailand proposing a meeting at the border in Chanthaburi province.
Thailand says it wants a “true ceasefire” backed by clear commitments, implementation measures and de-mining efforts, after weeks of fighting that have killed at least 80 people and displaced hundreds of thousands.
