Argentina has formally nominated Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as its candidate for United Nations Secretary-General, ahead of the 2027 leadership transition.
Speaking at Argentina’s Foreign Ministry, Grossi called for profound reforms at the UN and criticized the organization’s absence from major global conflicts. He argued the next Secretary-General must take a hands-on approach, including traveling directly to conflict zones.
Grossi highlighted his experience managing global crises at the IAEA, including efforts to prevent a nuclear disaster at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and maintaining dialogue with Iran. The UN selection process began in November 2025, with the new Secretary-General set to take office on January 1, 2027.
