Thousands of miners and rural workers marched through La Paz demanding the repeal of a government decree that partially removed fuel subsidies, sending gasoline and diesel prices sharply higher.

The protests target Supreme Decree 5503, issued last week, which rolled back subsidies that had kept fuel prices artificially low for over two decades. Gasoline prices have doubled, while diesel costs have tripled, prompting fears of rising food and transport prices.

President Rodrigo Paz Pereira, in office for just six weeks, says the move is necessary to ease fiscal pressure amid declining hydrocarbon revenues. Union leaders say protests will continue nationwide until the decree is withdrawn.
