Relatives of Venezuelan migrants have demanded the release of dozens of people transferred from the United States to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), the largest prison in Latin America, as part of a US immigration crackdown.
The full focus package features interviews with family members in Venezuela, human rights experts in San Salvador, and archive footage from El Salvador, where the high-security prison is located. Families say the detainees are ordinary migrants with no links to criminal groups and were given no communication after their transfer.
Human rights organisations have criticised the move as a violation of international law, warning of conditions inside CECOT and raising concerns over enforced disappearance, due process, and detainees’ physical and psychological well-being.
The deportations followed US allegations of links to organised crime, which relatives and rights groups strongly dispute.
