Kurukshetra: In a tragic incident, five painters from Uttar Pradesh died due to suffocation caused by a coal stove in a room near the Sterling Hotel in Kurukshetra district, Haryana. The victims had arrived from Saharanpur just two days earlier for a painting contract.

The deceased have been identified as contractor Noor (30), his brother Sonu (28), Roshanpal (45), Roshanpal’s brother-in-law Ramkumar (42), and Madan Pal (40), all residents of Sheikhpura Qadeem area. They were staying in staff rooms built near the hotel.

Police said the deaths occurred between 12 am and 2 am on Tuesday. Sector-7 outpost in-charge Kamal Kumar said an accidental death report has been registered. Forensic expert Dr Naresh Saini confirmed that the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning from the coal stove.

Sonu reportedly showed signs of movement, suggesting he tried to get up, but could not survive. Postmortem was conducted and the bodies were handed over to the families.

The incident has plunged their villages into grief. Noor had been married just four months ago, while Madan Pal was the sole breadwinner of his family. Roshanpal and Ramkumar’s deaths have dealt a double blow to their relatives.

Police are investigating the circumstances under which the stove was used in the closed room.
