Rampur: A Bolero driver was crushed to death after a truck loaded with wood chips overturned onto his vehicle on the Nainital Highway near the Pahadi Gate intersection under the Ganj Kotwali area on Sunday evening.

The accident occurred around 4.45 pm when both vehicles were heading towards Bilaspur Gate. Police said the Bolero, which was ahead of the truck, attempted to turn near the intersection. The truck driver tried to avoid a collision, hit the divider, broke it and overturned onto the Bolero, burying it under wood chips.

The Bolero was on contract with the Electricity Department and assigned to the Sub-Divisional Officer posted at the Khoud Electricity Sub-Station. The SDO was not in the vehicle at the time. The driver, identified as Firasat, a resident of Gujar Tola, was pulled out in critical condition and taken to the district hospital, where he was declared dead.

Traffic came to a halt for nearly an hour. Police from Ganj, Civil Lines and the city police station, along with traffic police, fire brigade teams and ambulances, reached the spot. Superintendent of Police Vidyasagar Mishra and CO City Jitendra Kumar supervised the rescue. A crane was used to remove the overturned truck and clear the highway.

The truck driver fled the scene. Police said the truck has a Rampur registration and efforts are on to trace the absconding driver. An investigation into possible overloading is underway. CCTV footage of the accident has surfaced and is being widely shared on social media.
