After two weeks of strike against neoliberal Decree 5503, Bolivia’s Central Workers’ Union met with the government in La Paz for negotiations amid repression of protesters. Over the past three days, workers marched 55 kilometers across the country before arriving in the capital on Monday. The union presented a document of proposals, including a draft decree to replace the current one, and announced intensified measures to pressure the administration of President Rodrigo Paz. Meanwhile, security forces repressed demonstrations in La Paz with tear gas. Decree 5503 eliminates the fuel subsidy, raising gasoline and diesel prices and severely impacting workers.
