A 65-year-old man was found dead in Keelung on Thursday morning, with authorities suspecting that sudden low temperatures may be partly to blame.

Over 200 people have experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest since New Year’s Eve. While it’s difficult to determine how many were caused by the cold snap, the correlation is concerning.

Since Tuesday, a powerful cold air mass has caused temperatures to drop across Taiwan, reaching lows of 10°C in northern and central regions.

The cold snap is exacerbated by Taiwan’s infrastructure. Buildings here are generally designed for tropical heat and very few have central heating or adequate insulation.
