Offenders are more likely to experience poor physical or mental health, as well as addiction, increasing the risk of reoffending. A recent report by England’s chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, found half of those on probation smoked, many had drug or alcohol problems, and most had poor mental health. They were also less likely to be screened for major cancers.
