Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has launched a national petition urging citizens to oppose EU funding for Ukraine as the country fights Russian aggression. Framing the upcoming April election as a choice between war and peace, Orban claims backing Ukraine could bring unwanted conflict and economic strain to Hungary.
The move targets rural voters and echoes Orban’s past anti‑migrant campaigns, while opposition leader Peter Magyar positions his Tisza party as supporting peace and rejecting conscription or escalation. The European Commission recently proposed a €90 billion aid package for Ukraine, but Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic insisted it should not affect them financially.
