Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming clarified that the nomination of selected Chinese new villages for Unesco World Heritage status was made by the International Council of Monuments and Sites (Icomos) Malaysia, not the ministry.
He told the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Jan 21) that the government supports heritage recognition for all villages, noting it can boost local economies and complement Visit Malaysia 2026.
Nga highlighted that the ministry has invested RM100.5mil in 858 development projects for Chinese new villages, including infrastructure upgrades, house repairs, and new homes, and has also funded programmes for 50 Indian villages benefiting over 22,000 residents.
