An intern doctor was allegedly assaulted by the chief warden at the Mayo Institute of Medical Sciences in Safedabad, Barabanki, after he raised complaints over poor hostel facilities and unhygienic food, triggering massive protests by students on the campus.

According to students, the chief warden, Awadesh Yadav, along with his associates, allegedly attacked the intern doctor with iron rods and sticks. Students who attempted to intervene were reportedly abused and threatened. A video purportedly showing the assault has since gone viral on social media.

The victim has been identified as Prabhakar Vishwas, an MBBS graduate currently undergoing internship at the institute. Police said Vishwas complained that poor-quality food and unhygienic conditions prevailed in the hostel. When he raised the issue with the chief warden around 11 am, the warden allegedly lost his temper, pushed him and dragged him inside the campus.

Vishwas further alleged that the warden called his associates and ordered them to assault him. Students who tried to stop the attack were also allegedly threatened and beaten with iron rods and sticks.

Police said the injured intern was sent for a medical examination, which revealed a deep head injury caused by a rod, along with injuries on his back and shoulder.

As news of the assault spread, hundreds of MBBS students gathered on the campus and launched a protest against the college administration. Police personnel reached the spot and tried to pacify the students, but the agitation continued for nearly two hours, with students demanding strict action against those involved.

The situation eased only after the institute’s director, Madhurika Singh, arrived and addressed the students through a public address system. She announced the immediate removal of the chief warden and assured that a new warden would be appointed. She also said legal action would be taken against those found guilty.

Police officials told the students that a case would be registered once a formal complaint was submitted and assured them that the accused would not be spared.

Meanwhile, protesting students alleged that despite charging high fees, private medical colleges fail to provide basic hostel facilities and nutritious food. They claimed that when students raise genuine concerns, they are often threatened and intimidated instead of their grievances being addressed.
