Fifteen Filipino crew members of the cargo vessel MV Devon Bay safely returned to Manila after being rescued by the China Coast Guard in a rare moment of maritime cooperation in the disputed South China Sea.

The crew was recovered near Scarborough Shoal after the Singapore-flagged vessel, carrying 55,000 tonnes of nickel ore, encountered trouble believed to be caused by cargo liquefaction and rough seas. The survivors were later transferred to the Philippine Coast Guard ship BRP Teresa Magbanua.

Philippine Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan thanked the China Coast Guard for responding to the international distress call, stressing that saving lives transcends territorial disputes.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing for four missing crew members, including Captain Elimar Jucal, who was reportedly the last to leave the sinking ship. Two crew members were confirmed deceased.
