Archaeologists in central Egypt reported finding a 43‑ to 49‑foot, well‑preserved papyrus in a New Kingdom tomb, underscoring a rare, scientifically documented discovery. The papyrus is a nearly complete Book of the Dead scroll with spells, prayers, and illustrations tied to ancient Egyptian afterlife beliefs.
Recovered in Al‑Ghuraifa, Minya governorate, it retains detailed hieroglyphs and scenes such as the Weighing of the Heart, with provenance verified by excavation. The find follows the 52‑foot Saqqara scroll recovered in 2023, the only other complete example from scientific excavation in over a century.
Associated artifacts include painted sarcophagi, ritual jars, amulets, shabti figurines, mummies, and canopic jars. High‑resolution scanning and infrared imaging are preserving the papyrus for study and possible museum display.
