Argentines endure the heatwave peak
Argentines in Buenos Aires sought relief from a harsh heatwave on Monday by swapping steaming yerba mate for its chilled version with ice cubes. In the capital, families flocked to ponds and fountains, paddling in the water and sheltering in the shade of trees while parks and promenades thinned out under the midday sun. Some residents carried cold drinks as they walked shirtless along near-empty stretches of pavement as the heat intensified. Many also traded the traditional hot mate for terere, its chilled version, often prepared with ice and juice. The city of Buenos Aires remained under a yellow alert for high temperatures, and Buenos Aires province under an orange alert.
