Burnin' Red Ivanhoe – Miley Smile-Stage Recall 1972 (Denmark, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock)
The band's later albums sold even worse than their first efforts, and touring fatigue set in, so in April 1972, after celebrating their fifth anniversary, the band broke up. But before that happened, Burnin' Red Ivanhoe recorded one more album – a "live in the studio" album, "Miley Smile/Stage Recall." Surprisingly, it contained only three older songs; the rest was new material. The resulting album was excellent.Burnin Red Ivanhoe released their fourth album, Miley Smile/Stage Recall, in June 1972 on Sonet.
The album compiles eight tracks recorded live-in-studio during a single day following the band’s final tour. It documents the group in transition, performing a mix of older material, new vocal pieces, and reworked compositions with altered instrumentation and vocal distribution. Most of the tracks reflect a looser, ensemble-oriented approach and showcase songwriting contributions from multiple members, diverging from the earlier Vogel-centered repertoire.
Miley Smile retains the W.W.W. lineup. Vogel plays Mellotron and contributes vocals. Menzer sings on several tracks; Stæhr sings lead on “A Monster Song.” Vogel and Fick co-wrote the music. Lyrics were supplied in part by Niels Erik Wille.
Sessions took place on April 16, 1972, at Rosenberg Studio in Copenhagen, captured across two three-hour blocks immediately following a farewell tour in Norway. The album was recorded entirely live with no overdubs. Freddy Hansson, who engineered and co-produced, was concurrently involved with 1972 Danish releases by Midnight Sun (Walking Circles), Andrew John (The Machine Stops), Hurdy Gurdy (Hurdy Gurdy), Alrune Rod (Alrune Rock), Stig & Steen (Da Solen Kom), and The Old Man & The Sea (The Old Man & The Sea).
Stage Recall was released in a gatefold sleeve designed by the band with cover photography by Ebbe Nyvold. The record appeared on Sonet under the Danish Music Centre imprint with publishing by DMC. The runouts are machine-stamped. Though this marked the band’s final release before disbandment, members remained active in overlapping projects and would later reunite in different formations
