On February 12, Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies gave general approval to the new youth penal regime, which lowers the age of criminal responsibility from 16 to 14 years. The legislation establishes a maximum prison sentence of up to 15 years for serious crimes, while providing alternative penalties for offenses carrying sentences of less than 10 years. The initiative, strongly supported by Javier Milei’s far‑right government, passed with 149 votes in favor, 100 against, and no abstentions. The bill will now undergo article‑by‑article review before moving to the Senate for final consideration.
