Video summary of the ALDE ADLE Seminar: Turkey's european identity and the role of culture and media

Event date: 30/09/10 09:00 to 12:30
Location: BE BRUSSELS A3E-2

The relations between Turkey and the EU are one of the most debated topics within the EU. Not only because Turkey is a candidate country and is currently conducting accession negotiations with the EU, or because it has established one of the deepest economic relationships with the Union as a third country but also because its accession process is put at the top of the political agenda of many EU member states.

Turkey's accession process is a big test for the EU itself, which, following successive enlargements and the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty, has been striving to define and consolidate a 'European' identity.

Yet, the role of the cultural and media sectors is less prominently acknowledged . . Additionally, press freedom, media pluralism, and freedom of expression are essential elements of the Copenhagen criteria, which set out the requirements for candidate Member States to join the EU.

The seminar will kick off a discussion introduced by two panels of distinguished guests:

Panel 1: Turkeys' European Identity

Dr. Burak Erdenir, Deputy Secretary General for EU Affairs
Pelin Batu - Actress and activist

Panel 2 : The role of culture and media in shaping public perceptions both in Turkey and in the EU

Asli Aydintasbas - Senior columnist at Milliyet
Nahide Deniz-Correspondant of Deutsche Welle, BBC and Bulgarian News Agency
Metin Kazak and Marietje Schaake, Members of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe cordially invite you to share your views in this crucial debate.
