The Chinese Communist Party has stepped up its crackdown on the Falun Gong spiritual practice in recent weeks, as part of security measures for the regime's annual political sessions. Practitioners already imprisoned have died from intensified abuse, while others have been arbitrarily detained by police.

Three practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice in northern Heilongjiang province have died since February. It's part of an intensified crackdown by the Chinese regime during its annual political sessions in Beijing.

Qing Yueming died on February 26 at the Jiamusi prison. Prison officials told his family that he had died from a heart attack. But this picture of his body tells a different story. Qing's relatives say he had wounds on his face, and his torso showed signs of extensive beating.

Two more Falun Gong practitioners from the same prison died this month after intensified abuse. Yu Yungang died on March 5 in hospital as doctors tried to remove a bone from his skull. On March 8, prison officials claimed Liu Chuanjiang had died from a heart attack.

These deaths happened as the Chinese regime stepped up its security measures for its annual political sessions in Beijing. In nearby Liaoning province, two Falun Gong practitioners were taken by police on March 9.

[Relative of Detained Falun Gong Practitioner]:
"The police said the 'Two Sessions' was going on now, and for security reasons they're detaining them. Police claim they'll let them go after 15 days. Although they say that, no one believes them."

Falun Gong was popular throughout China during the 90s. In 1999 in an extra-judicial move, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party at the time, Jiang Zemin banned Falun Gong. The regime aims to force practitioners to give up the practice through physical and psychological torture. To date, there are nearly 3,500 confirmed deaths as a result of the persecution.
