The Swiss are tightening their laws on foreigners. Convicted criminals will have to leave. But even relatively minor offenses like breaking and entering or welfare fraud will suffice to forfeit a residence visa.Nearly 53 percent of Swiss voters approved changing the constitution in a referendum. Now the Federal Council and parliament have to hammer out a law that foresees automatic expulsion. Whether doing so will reduce crime is just as uncertain as whether xenophobic tendencies in Switzerland will continue to rise.
