Running Tips in Cold Weather - part of the women's fitness video series by GeoBeats. Running Tips in Cold Weather When it’s very cold outside it’s absolutely possible to run outside. I grew up, my entire life, running in New York throughout the winter. So, it’s possible. Some things to consider are, obviously, what to wear. You want to make sure that you’re wearing clothes that are layered. You can wear a couple of layers on top, a couple of layers on the bottom, and take them off as you warm up. Again, consider that it’s about 15 degrees warmer while you’re running than the actual temperature. You’re going to feel like it’s 15 degrees warmer, so consider that when you’re choosing what to wear. Also, you still want to be careful for black ice. You want to be careful for slippery conditions, things like that. On cold days it’s actually best to stick with the main roads because you know they have been swept for snow. They are probably safer than going into forest terrain or areas that may not be as safe with slippery and icy conditions. Still remember to drink water. A lot of people when they’re cold, they forget that they still need to hydrate themselves. Really important to stay hydrated, even in cold weather.
