Red Panda on a tree in Sikkim. The Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens, literally translated as "shining cat") is an arboreal (tree dwelling) mammal and the lone species in the genus Ailurus. It is only a tad larger than a domestic cat, has a reddish-brown pelage, a long, bushy tail, and a cute waddling gait due to its front legs being shorter than the rear ones. It eats bamboo, but being omnivorous may also steal birds' eggs, birds and their chicks, insects, and smaller mammals. It is a solitary animal, mainly active from dusk to dawn, and is largely sedentary when not active. It is also crepuscular, being largely active between daylight and total darkness.
