Olive Oil Vs. Canola Oil - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Olive oil is healthier than canola oil, and that is because olive oil has a little bit of a better fat profile. It has more mono unsaturated fat. It also has more saturated fat, which is the bad fat, but it is a little bit higher in the mono unsaturated fats and it has less poly unsaturated fats. So that basically means poly unsaturated fat is not really bad for you but it is also not really good for you. And I would say that since the olive oil is higher in the mono unsaturated fat, which we know is really good for you, it is a little bit ahead of canola oil there. It also has the poly phenols and the antioxidants that canola oil does not have. We have a lot of evidence that hows that populations that consume olive oil as their main source of fat, they have much lower incidence of heart disease and cancer. We do not have that sort of evidence for canola oil. Now canola oil is still one of the healthiest oils. It has a much higher amount of mono unsaturated, or good fat, than typical vegetable oil. So canola oil is still a healthy oil and is a better choice for foods such as baked products where olive oil would not have the right flavor so muffins and things like that, you would want to use canola oil. Canola oil is made from the rapeseed plant and a lot of people have the misinterpretation that it has toxins in it. Well the erucic acid which is the part of the rapeseed plant that has toxins is not found in a significant quantity in canola oil. So it is actually safe. You just want to be careful when you are buying canola oil that you buy expeller pressed organic canola oil. And that is because a typical canola oil is treated with chemicals and with thermal methods and that changes the fat profile of the oil and it actually has a negative effect on the fat profile of the oil. So you want to make sure it is expeller pressed and then the organic is necessary because those rapeseed crops are sprayed with quite a few pesticides so that is one thing to pay attention to with canola oil, that you make sure you get a high quality canola oil.
