The U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention says the Chinese regime is violating international law for detaining writer and Nobel Peace prize laureate Liu Xiaobo.
The United Nations panel is an independent group of human rights experts from five countries.
Liu was denied access to a lawyer and sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2009 on charges of state subversion. His wife was put under house arrest when he was imprisoned.
Liu is one of the authors of Charter 08—calling for political reform, freedom of association, and greater rights in China. It has spread rapidly through the Internet, gaining worldwide support.
The Chinese regime has received global criticism over Liu's detention. The regime stopped political dialogue and free trade agreement with Norway after Liu was awarded the Nobel Peace prize last year.
