Sicily's airports braced for delays on Friday after Mount Etna in southern Italy spewed columns of ash into the sky.
The volcano has been belching away for weeks, encouraging experts to warn there could be a big eruption soon.
Lying above the Sicilian town of Catania, Etna often erupts but rarely causes damage or the need for evacuation.
On Thursday, the hundreds of metres high plume of ash led to airspace being closed around the volcano. It has now reopened but with delays on flights expected throughout the day.
