Your windpipe (trachea) and gullet (esophagus) will be retracted with the muscles to reveal the anterior of the spine. Your surgeon will confirm the correct inter-vertebral disc for removal by using x-ray imaging. Any anterior vertebral body bone spurs (also known as lipping or osteophytes) will be trimmed to increase access. Pins will be screwed into the vertebral bodies and used to open up the collapsed disc space to regain normal inter-vertebral space height and alignment. The diseased inter-vertebral disc will be removed. Any posterior vertebral body bone spurs and the posterior longitudinal ligament may be removed showing orthopedic movies.
