Thanksgiving - Turkey Stuffing and Nutrition: Thanksgiving

The ingredients in turkey stuffing that are higher in calories and fat are going to be butter, and sometimes cream is used in recipes, often bacon or bacon bits or sausage. Cutting out those ingredients, or using low fat substitutes is a good way to cut back on calories in turkey. So you can use a light butter to cut back on calories and fat, or canola oil to cut back on the total calories. You could use a low sodium chicken broth, and a low sodium fat free chicken broth to cut back on the calories, the fat, and the salt.

To make the stuffing healthier, you could replace the traditional white bread cubes with whole grain bread. That would add a better flavor, a little more full body, and it would be a nice alternative to the traditional white bread. Or you could add corn bread as an, also a nice alternative to the traditional white bread, and that would have more nutrition as well.

Finally, the best way to cut back on fat in the turkey dressing is to cook it in a separate casserole dish in the oven, not inside the turkey. Because a lot of the fat comes from the turkey drippings that it absorbs while the turkey's cooking.
