Dan Marian, chairman of the Israel Engineers Association for Construction and Infrastructure estimates if an earthquake hits Israel 10,000 will die and over 300,000 will suffer injuries. Marian made the comments following the devastating earthquake that hit New Zealand killing scores and wounding hundreds and damaging buildings and infrastructure. While one cannot compare the deadly earthquake that hit Haiti, the situation of old buildings in Israel is not better than those in Turkey he said. Marian called on the government to strengthen existing buildings built years ago adding Israel is not prepared for an earthquake scenario. He blasted the government for failing to take the necessary action to protect and strengthen existing buildings in Israel against earthquake and for failing to delegate the necessary funds.
