Dozens were feared dead on Thursday, two days after a a landslide swept through two villages in Papua New Guinea, covering buildings and leaving up to 40 people missing, Australian media reported.
The accident occurred in the island state's Southern Highlands on Tuesday morning, prompting U.S. oil giant ExxonMobil to stop work at its nearby 15.7 billion U.S. dollar liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.
A joint NGO assessment team was traveling to the site, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on Thursday.
Papua New Guinea shares the island of New Guinea with Indonesia, and is Australia's nearest neighbour.
