An 18-year-old Tibetan monk self-immolated in southwest China on Saturday, March 10, the anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan Uprising.
London-based Free Tibet said on Monday that the monk set himself on fire and died near government buildings in Aba County in Sichuan Province. He was from the Kirti Monastery, where many of the monks who have self-immolated were from.
This is the fourth Tibetan self-immolation reported this month, bringing the total to 26 in the past year.
Chinese authorities are increasing security measures in response to the self-immolations and other protests in the region, and in anticipation of the anniversary of the March 2008 riots, which began in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa and spread to other cities.
Free Tibet also said last week that three Tibetan protesters had been shot and one killed by Chinese security forces at a police station in Qinghai Province. A local policeman denied it, calling it a "rumor".
