Barbers and Stylists Spar Over Barber Poles - as part of the news and politics series by GeoBeats.
All of us have seen the nostalgic red, white and blue barber poles, but who knew these adorable little poles could stir up so much drama?
Michigan, Minnesota, and North Carolina are campaigning to save those poles for barbers only. Barbers are adamant that a barber's license is required for any establishment showcasing the signature pole, while hairstylists believe cutting hair is the same everywhere - barber’s license or not.
Regardless of the outcome, the barber pole has a long history dating back to middle ages.
In the past, barbers not only trimmed hair but also performed surgery, bloodletting and tooth pulling! Given their versatile skills, they used to make more than surgeons! Depending on who you ask, the red and white stripes in the pole symbolized bandages or blood and veins.
In Asia, things can be different. The red, white and blue pole can also be the signature of a brothel. In South Korea, a barber pole may indicate a barber shop, brothel or a massage place.
Getting back to the US of A, barbers claim the red, white, and blue pole is a cherished symbol of their specialized craft.
What do you say - barber poles strictly for barbers or would that be ...barbaric?
