STORY: Total distributed video images Saturday of the Elgin drilling platform, off Scotland's east coast, filmed on March 29, as a team of international experts advises the company on how to plug a massive gas leak at one of its North Sea wells.

A flare, which was lit as part of Total's response to the gas leak to relieve pressure in the North Sea well, was extinguished on Friday night, according to the company's chief executive writing on Total's twitter account. A spokesman said the flame had gone out by itself without technical intervention.

Total evacuated its 238 platform workers, and set up a two-mile exclusion zone for safety reasons, with fire-fighting ships on standby.

A senior union official said on Friday that Total had repeatedly assured workers a leak was impossible until just hours before evacuating them.
