The Blue Economy - Innovation No.11: Wind Energy without (new) Pylons

Have you ever wondered why wind turbines have to be put onto pylons? The higher the blades are placed, the more wind these can catch. Some pylons even tower 300 meters in the sky.

Nicola Delon, Julien Choppin and Raphaël Ménard realized wind generators could be placed on existing pylons constructed for power transmission. Many of them can have a double function: first carry high voltage electricity, second provide infrastructure for new wind generators. Pylons are engineered to resist wind. New generators could be placed inside the pylons, not on top, further stabilizing the structures. They build their logic on a few of the core principles of The Blue Economy: use what you have, look for multiple benefits, keep it simple.

In India more than 100,000 pylons crossing government forests could quickly be fitted with these vertical generators. If all existing pylons were used in France, it could generate electricity equivalent to two nuclear power stations.
