Six people have been killed in a shootout at the US consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Three police officers and three gunmen died in the assault, while a fourth gunman escaped.

The US secretary of state has voiced deep regrets over the loss of life, while the US ambassador to Turkey says the incident was an obvious act of terrorism.
